Meet Damilola Olamilekan Osho(Dami Laylo)

*WHO IS DAMI?*
My name is Damilola Olamilekan Osho, professionally known as Dami Laylo. I’m an Afro-fusion artist focused on storytelling through melody and emotion. My music blends Afrobeat, soul, and contemporary sounds to express love, identity, and real-life experiences in a way listeners can connect with deeply.

I was born and raised in Surulere as the only child of a single mother who raised me through many challenges and sacrifices. Life hasn’t always been easy for both of us, and one of my greatest motivations is to make her proud and show her the beauty of the world through my journey. As I always say, “Mummy is all I have, we have suffered together.”

As an independent artist, I’m continuing to grow and share my story with the world, hoping to be discovered by the universe while staying true to my sound and purpose. šŸŽ¶✨

*CAN WE TALK ABOUT YOUR NEW RELEASE “LAY LO” ?*
“Lay Lo” is a very personal record for me. It reflects a deep attraction kind of love, almost untouchable, like loving someone you admire so much that it feels bigger than you. It expresses desire, admiration, and emotional vulnerability, and captures both the beauty and tension in that kind of connection.

CAN WE ALSO TALK ABOUT TRYTAPED RECORDINGS COMPANY?*
TryTaped Recordings Limited has played an important role in shaping my journey as an artist. They focus strongly on quality sound, artist development, and intentional music creation. Working with them helped me understand the importance of structure, patience, and originality instead of rushing releases.

*HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING MUSIC?*
I’ve been making music for several years now, using that time to develop my sound, understand my identity as an artist, and grow both creatively and professionally within the industry.

*WHAT INSPIRES YOU INTO MUSIC?*
My biggest inspiration comes from life experiences, especially my journey growing up with my mother in Surulere. Being raised by a single parent and going through challenges together shaped how I see the world and express emotions.

As I always say, “Mummy is all I have — we have suffered together,” and that reality pushes me to create music that is honest, relatable, and meaningful. I’m also inspired by relationships, African culture, and the continuous evolution of sound across the continent and globally.

*IF NOT MUSIC, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE?*
If I wasn’t making music, I would probably still be in another creative field like filmmaking or visual arts, because creativity has always been a big part of who I am.

*ANY REGRET AS AN ARTIST?*
I don’t have regrets as an artist. Every mistake and delay has contributed to my growth and helped me understand the importance of timing, patience, and consistency.

*CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRODUCER URKTAVE AND AFROYANA?*
Chizi Owhondah Natha-Amadi (Urktave) is a very detail-oriented producer who recognized my potential early when we connected in Surulere. That moment became a turning point for me because he helped refine and structure my sound from the beginning. The quality and richness people hear in my songs reflect his deep understanding of music production, from beat creation to audio engineering. Not everyone immediately understands his creative patterns, but true creatives recognize his brilliance. I feel privileged to have crossed paths with someone so patient, intentional, and gifted.
Lagos truly revealed a rare talent through him.

Onyiyechi Gift Amadi (AfroYana) has also played an important role in guiding my journey. Her belief in intentional growth, structure, and artist development helped shape my direction professionally and continues to support my evolution as an artist in a meaningful way.

*WHICH PLATFORM CAN WE LISTEN TO YOUR NEW RELEASE?*
“Lay Lo” is available on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, VEVO, iTunes, Audiomack, Boomplay, YouTube, Deezer, and other digital platforms worldwide.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH TRYTAPED RECORDINGS COMPANY?
I’ve been working with TryTaped since 2023, starting around the release of my first single Kigoma. They helped with my first release and entirely where I am currently in my music career, at an important stage when my story was still unfolding, haven’t understood the true uniqueness of my sound, they came through, polished and supported in the branding of my career and I’ll forever be grateful and will never forget their positive professional impact.
From my experience, TryTaped truly supports Afrobeat artists with a focus on quality over noise while steadily building their brand. Working with them helped me understand the importance of intentional growth, patience, and developing a sound that can stand the test of time rather than chasing quick releases.

*HOW IS YOUR FANS’ FEEDBACK TO YOUR MUSIC?*
Though I still have very small fanmily which I strongly believe we’ll grow by the grace of God, in all their feedback has been very encouraging. Many listeners connect with the emotion and honesty in my music, and that connection motivates me to keep creating.

*WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?*
I respect artists who have built longevity while staying true to their sound and identity. I see many A-list artists as my older brothers and sisters in the industry, and I admire their creativity, consistency, and hard work. As the “newborn” among them, I believe there’s still a lot for me to learn from their journeys.

*WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO AS AN ARTIST?*
I look up to creatives who are not afraid to evolve their sound while remaining authentic to themselves.

*ANY ADVISE TO UPCOMING ARTIST?*
My advice to upcoming artists is to focus on developing your sound and identity. Don’t rush the process. Quality, patience, and consistency will always stand out over hype.

*ANY CHALLENGES AS AN ARTIST?*
One of the biggest challenges for me as an upcoming artist is balancing creativity with my day to day side hustle and fighting the tongues that whisper discouragement and disbelief to my music journey. Staying consistent and visible in a competitive industry also requires discipline and persistence.
