The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has successfully conducted its Shipping Branch elections, culminating in the emergence of Comrade Femi Abass as the new Branch President. The election, held Monday at the Union’s National Secretariat in Apapa, Lagos, marked a smooth leadership transition from Comrade Ekpeyon Ekpeyon, who completed his constitutionally allowed two terms—spanning eight years. Until his election, Comrade Abass served as the Vice President of the Shipping Branch. His rise to the top position comes at a time when some quarters had anticipated discord surrounding the electoral process. NARTO, MWUN condemn N12,500 e- call up levy at Lekki port

  The National Road Transport Owners ( NARTO) and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have jointly expressed dissaproval over the N12,500 e- call up levy implemented by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation at the Lekki port. Both unions are urging the Lagos State government to reconsider the levy, citing significant economic concerns. NARTO had initially objected to the said ‘outrageous levy’, detailing in a letter to the ministry the already high cost of petroleum products and arguing that the new fees goes against princilple of equity, affordability and the broader interest of Nigeria. Despite the appeal, NARTO stated that the Ministry has not responded or convened a meeting to discuss the issue of mutual interest. Shipping branch MWUN elects Abass Oluyinka as new President    Comrade Abass Olufemi Oluyinka has been elected as the President of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Shipping, Clearing, Forwarding Agencies workers branch for the next four years. Oluyinka who succeeds Comrade Ekpeyong Ekpeyong after two terms in office was elected unopposed at the 6th Branch Quadrennial Delegates Conference held at the Union’s Secretariat in Lagos on Monday. Until his emergence, Oluyinka was the Vice President of the branch. Bunu To Dockworkers: Halt Operations If Workers Are Injured — Says Members’ Lives Not For Multinationals’ Negligence Determined to prioritize members’ safety, the President General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has issued a stern warning to dockworkers at the quay aprons across seaports nationwide to always halt port operations whenever a worker is injured. Bunu gave the warning on Friday in Lagos during Dockworkers Branch Working Committee (BWC) meeting. He called on quayside workers to prioritize safety at port terminals to ensure accident-free operations. The unionist stated that workers’ lives cannot be sacrificed in the line of duty due to multinational companies’ negligence; hence, any injured person must be rescued before work can continue.
