NARTO, MWUN condemn N12,500 e- call up levy at Lekki port

The National Road Transport Owners ( NARTO) and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have jointly expressed dissaproval over the N12,500 e- call up levy implemented by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation at the Lekki port.

Both unions are urging the Lagos State government to reconsider the levy, citing significant economic concerns.

NARTO had initially objected to the said ‘outrageous levy’, detailing in a letter to the ministry the already high cost of petroleum products and arguing that the new fees goes against princilple of equity, affordability and the broader interest of Nigeria.

Despite the appeal, NARTO stated that the Ministry has not responded or convened a meeting to discuss the issue of mutual interest.

NARTO’s argument on the said levy is hinged on the economic implications, and the hardship Nigerians are currently facing, pointing out that it would be unrealistic to impose such levy on its members and for the general interest of Nigerians.

While both NARTO and MWUN affirm their committment to the e- call up initiative, they emphasize the imperative for the Lagos State Government to engage in dialogue regarding the levy.

They appeal to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo Olu to intervene, hoping to facilitate a mutual understanding between NARTO and the Ministry of Transportation on the contentious issue.
